My bowl of oatmeal is looking at me. It has about fifteen bright blue eyes floating around. Worry not, it is the lovely antioxidant-rich blueberry. I'm not some kind of deranged cereal killer (pun intended).
This is one of my favorite breakfasts. Incidentally, it is a recommended food for PCOS. The berries are good for all the antioxidant purposes and a natural source of fiber. Oats are a healthy grain and mine are minimally processed, making them that much better. Breakfast will not change for me (less sending evil glares in the direction of donuts). Changing the way you look at food doesn't have to be hard if you can find things that you like that correspond with things that are good for you. There are lots of choices. Yes, you give up stuff, but be serious: we always knew that cake or deep-fried bread covered in sugar and sauces or filled with sugar-laden fruit was not good for us. I know I generally suffered from PDG (post-donut guilt) after indulging in no less than two circular sins. And as much as the joke goes, just because it doesn't have a middle doesn't mean that that's how they took all the fat and calories out. My hips will confirm that.
I'm surfing through a lot of sites for food information about this problem, but it seems they all have at least one thing in common: monitor carbohydrates and lean into a diabetic diet plan. I'm going to tweak that as I go. I'm not diabetic. I need to watch my diet because of insulin levels that result from this issue, but I don't have to slice up my meal plan completely. It is about good choices. Diabetic diet plans are a good place to start, but I need a bit more.
I have some of my last classes this semester, today. This afternoon's class is done, so I will be home much earlier than usual. I'm going to use that time to get some exercise in. Yesterday, I made the dog very happy by taking her on a long walk that included some off-the-leash time at one of the community parks. She always looks at me adoringly, but yesterday she looked so content it was comical. Today is colder, but I think that will make it that much better of a walk. I'm also going to dust off my ipod so I can re-start the Couch 2 5K. A friend wants to do a half marathon next fall and I would like to join her.
Day 2 isn't much different than day 1 in this: today is full of new choices and new decisions. My oatmeal may be staring at me, but it is also giving me a blue smile that is going to make me feel good inside and out.
