Today was a little difficult. This morning was the Santa event at my daughter's school. I was one of the face painters. I love holiday events. Sadly, I also love holiday goodies. The event included breakfast with choices of: coffee cake, muffins and bagels. You see where this is going right? Carb mania! There was also fruit at one point.
As a face painter, the moment children arrived, I began to work. There was no time for a break. I didn't even have pauses to drink the cup of heavenly (and really a no-no) Starbucks that was sitting beside me. By the time I got a chance to eat, the event was clearing out.
Thankfully, whole-grain, oat bagels were left. Of the carb train, this was probably the safest car left behind. I sliced it, put a bit of plain cream cheese on it and ate half in an almost mechanical way - I was really hungry. I doubt I tasted much of it. I spread cream cheese on the other half but ended up not eating it. I knew that it probably wasn't the best thing for me. There wasn't any fruit left.
I was right. Even the healthiest option available was not great. A compact carbohydrate bundle like a bagel can cause insulin problems. Namely insulin can spike from eating this chewy bread. (see this site: http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/news116.html) But I have to wonder which was the greater evil: continuing to go without food or taking in some nourishment even if it wasn't the healthiest. It was my first bit of food for the day ingested at 12:30pm. Waiting so long for food is a bad thing for most bodies, but even more so for women afflicted with PCOS. You can't regulate your diet if you don't eat. Skipping meals = bad.
And half a bagel did not staunch my hunger for long. I took my daughter to a local sub shop with the intent of getting a salad and instead got a sub.
That's right: Strike Two.
I got whole-grain and minimal sauce-toppings, but it still wasn't a good idea. Now I'm sitting here trying to figure out what to do for dinner. My pumpkin has a movie night at one of her OOS (Out of School) organizations and the hubbs is still at work. Maybe I'll go get some veggie sushi for dinner. I know that's a good choice.
I also did about an hour of walking when the munchkin and I got back from our morning with the Jolly Fat Man. That was after helping to pull down and put away from the event, so pretty sure I got covered on exercise today.
I knew this wasn't going to be super easy, but today outlined that. What am I going to do when I get invited to someone's house? I'm going to end up either picking at the food or being the bad guest with the weird food restrictions. Maybe I should have sat on Santa's lap and made a wish myself:
Santa: Aren't you a little big to be on Santa's lap?
Me: Is that a comment about my weight, fat boy?
Santa: Ehem. No...of course not...no...hmm. Well, what would you like for Christmas, little...er...Miss?
*glares at the guy in the red suit for a bit*
Santa: There is a line of kids waiting you know.
Me: Keep your shirt on. I'd like carbs.
Santa: Carbs?
Me: Yeah. But they need to be diabetic-friendly, filled with fiber and nutrients and taste like brownies.
Santa: Are you for real?
Yeah, that probably wouldn't work too well... Guess I'll go find me some veggie sushi and call it a day!
